Shivering in Ohio

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

:veracold:We lost power briefly today (and yes I said a prayer of thanks that it was BRIEF) and it made me think of that poor old man who froze to death in his own home. I said a prayer for him, too. I took some great shots of the inch-thick ice covering everything but this time I couldn’t get the pics to transfer (I think it’s my kid-fried, OMG school’s cancelled AGAIN brain). Hopefully soon. Needless to say, they’re beautiful in their simplicity but frightening if you give it some thought. The dh made it to work today (couldn’t yesterday, the roads were too bad so someone had to cover for him) and things are slowly clearing up. Well, except the ground–and our driveway. I’m stuck for now as I don’t have 4WD. :baby: Loser Maybe I’ll escape the madness soon. :helphang: :starwars: Razzanhit:

I’ve been told, (Ahem, EllenT) that it’s quite warm and sunny and comfortable in the south. Hmmm… I think I need to buy a one way plane ticket and check it out until spring. What about you? Are you shivering?

Snow Day

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

Sooo, the kiddos are out of school again today for snow and since I received some GREAT news last night  :clap2: :cheer: I went outside to play today. We’ve got about six inches on the ground and the ice is coming down now, but I thought I’d share some pics of my day.

Here is the dh hard at work…

What on earth is he making??? (more later)

And the fam being ornery and having fun…

That’s a shovel-full of snow being thrown!

One of the barn in the distance. The snow was so pretty!

My barberry bush… Just thought it was pretty.

And back to whatever that thing is the dh and fam were making…. Anyone have any ideas? I’ll give you a hint: It’s a YouTube funny popular with the kids…..

And pic number two:

And if you’re still confused (like me), it’s a liopleurodon, made semi-famous (via YouTube) in the Charlie the Unicorn series.

That was my day… How did you spend yours?

Characters and conflict

Monday, January 26th, 2009

I’m stuck on characters and conflict lately, mainly because I’m trying to figure out what’s keeping my current characters apart as I work on a proposal. I hate the kind of writing where a simple conversation between the two characters would fix everything. You know what I mean. No offense to any author, but if your characters can’t talk about a problem or issue, really, why are they together?

Anyway, getting the conflict right for a book isn’t always easy for me. In fact, I’d say it’s the hardest part of writing for me. That whole internal/external, we’ve-got-serious-baggage-between-us issue that makes your hero and heroine WORK at putting the past behind them so that they can be with the one they love. Yeah, I’m there. And I’m stuck. Which means I haven’t nailed it yet.

Okay, sorry for rambling. My mind is in a far away place at the moment

It’s the dreaded Monday. How was your weekend? Anyone else snowed in? I’m waiting on my potato soup to cook. Yum. There’s nothing like a hot bowl of soup on a cold, snowy day.

OH! Today’s announce the winner day, too. :winner: MarthaE!! Martha, please email me privately with your shipping instructions. You’ve won a pair of my beaded earrings. Enjoy!

So, what are your plans for Monday? Do you have any conflict in your life?

Sex Ed?

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

No, it’s not what you’re thinking. I read a wonderful book recently (don’t ask–I won’t tell), but I had major issues with it. Why? Because it had everything–great humor, wonderful writing, a nice, fast pace–until it came to the love scenes.

This book started off with a bang and was soooo funny! But the MOMENT the author hit the love scenes, I swear I felt like I was getting a lecture in health education class. Everything, her wording, the tone, everything, was so, so technical. Ick. It totally and I do mean TOTALLY drew me out of the book. I read it anyway, finished it and loved how things wrapped up–but I skimmed those love scenes because they just didn’t seem at all sexy or sensual or, well, loving.

As a writer, I can attest to the fact that writing a love scene is no easy task. In your head, you do have to get technical to make sure all the appropriate parts are, well, in the appropriate places. And while I don’t mind a few technical terms thrown into the mix, an endless stream of them just leaves me cold.

What about you? Do you want the very blunt, very technical terms for your characters’ body parts/reactions etc? Or do you prefer to leave a little more to the imagination and focus on the feelings and emotions and sensations of your characters getting it on? When is enough enough?
