Sifting through childhood

Monday, August 31st, 2009

My son’s birthday is coming up and for a couple years we’ve promised to update his very childish room. For a kid who normally doesn’t care what his room looks like, the fact that he asked says just how childish it looks in comparison to his age. LOL Sad, sad, sad, I know. It should’ve been done about five years ago.

Anyway, lately we’ve been sifting through the contents of his very overcrowded room and the memories have been bittersweet. Everything from baby toys, stuffed animals to all the adultish stuff he now has.

As to that package I missed on Friday? Line edits for my last Tulane book. I was so hoping for some nice little goodie LOL

ps–anyone know a really easy way to remove wallpaper? I know the fabric softener and warm water one. It works. But basically I’m looking for NO work. LOL Not gonna happen is it?

Curiosity

Friday, August 28th, 2009

Fed Ex came today. I know they were here because of the nice little sticky note left on my door. And now my curiosity is killing me. What was it??? I won’t know until Monday. Can I wait that long? :bubble: I have a feeling it was more work rather than something fun (because I haven’t ordered anything fun–or more work LOL) but I’m due line edits so I’m wondering… If it is my line edits, I have a lot of work to get done over the weekend.

Do you have any weekend plans? Going anywhere? Doing anything nice? I’d love to catch a movie but I want to see Time Traveler’s Wife and I have a feeling I’d get out voted by the fam. *sigh*

I finally did it

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

What, you ask? I finally broke down and hired an assistant. Lately I’ve run into problems all small businesses run into eventually. If business is going well, then there is a lot of work to be done–and typically not enough time to do it in.

One day several months ago I sat down and made a list of all the things I’d have an assistant do if I ever hired one. And you know what? It was a pretty darn big list! Even more amazing? NONE of the items had anything to do with writing. Everything on the list was about promotion, website maintenance, general business, and the like. I did a lot of thinking, debating. Given the economy is now the time TO hire an assistant?

Honestly? I wasn’t sure. But, I do know it isn’t possible for me to produce any more work at this stage without one (not and keep my family!–which always comes first.)

So, yesterday my newly hired assistant came to the house and we spent several hours attempting to get me caught up on things that (blushing) haven’t been done in a while. As in…a year. Or more.

And you know what? I’m so excited! We got so much done! Now I’m totally stoked because I’m hoping that once the training period is over I will be able to go back to why I began in this business in the first place–the joy and pleasure of writing–without the business aspect of things taking the fun out of it or distracting me. LOL

So what about you? If you made a list of all the things you would rather someone else do whether professional or personal, what would be on it?

School in session

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

(And can I be a really bad mom and say—Yessssssssssssssss!!!!!!!!! LOL)

The fam headed back to school today and I have to say I’m looking forward to getting back on a schedule. I got so little done this summer. Seems like all we did was run here and run there.

As to a puppy update. Well, she’s GROWING. OMG. What have I gotten myself into??? She’s so lovable tho. And she knows tricks. I’ve taught her to sit and shake. We’re working on Stay but she doesn’t have it down yet. And she’s a klutz. The dog has massive paws and when she runs she trips herself up. It’s hysterical.

Have you been doing anything exciting lately? Reading any good books? I just started one by Barbara Freethy (can’t remember the title tho *sigh*) and it’s great. I’m not very far into it but I’m loving the story.

County Fairs

Friday, August 14th, 2009

I turned in my deadline book today–just in time to go to the county fair this evening and celebrate with a funnel cake. OMG. Soooo good! Our county hosts the largest county fair in Ohio. Every kind of food, ride, entertainment etc is there. I haven’t gone for years but the fam went tonight to help with a church food booth. My feet hurt, my back aches but it was great to get out and talk to people–and eat funnel cake LOL

So what have you been doing? So sorry I’ve been MIA. This month has been very, very hectic!
