Sleepless night

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Last night I made the mistake of drinking two glasses of tea too late in the day. The result? At 3 a.m. this morning I was still wide awake. Silly I watched TV, I tried to work. I answered an IM from a friend who noticed I was online and who should’ve been sleeping herself!

And now after less than four hours of sleep I’m DRAGGING. But there is too much going on to give into the need for a nap :sleepL since one of my children told us a poster board was needed today at school–as they were being dropped off at school. :soapbox: So, instead of working (or sleeping) like I should be doing, I’m heading out the door to buy a poster board and taking it back to school. It’s a one shot deal. If my first and only shot doesn’t have the poster? Said kid is out of luck. :box:

So, what do you do when you can’t sleep? Do you resort to rereading a favorite book? Watch TV? Stare up at the ceiling? What are your tricks for falling asleep after too much caffeine?

Better still, what are your tricks for STAYING AWAKE after being up most of the night?

Feeling Old

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

On a good day I don’t feel my age. I choose to think the ads and articles citing 40 as the new 30 as true (don’t burst my bubble if it’s not) and with that BIG birthday right around the corner, I’m not feeling that bad about it which is funny considering I always thought it as old. I mean, I work around the house, exercise and try to keep upbeat. Age is a mind thing, right? It’s all relative?

Well, I think it is until you make one wrong move and then–BAM–your (or rather MY) back goes out.

*sigh*

Now?

I’m feelin’ old.

I’ve had back issues since I was a kid after a skateboarding incident (my first and LAST time on one) involving a concrete step. But when you bend to put a sheet on the bed and suddenly you can’t move? That has a way of ruining anyone’s mood.

So here I am, flat on my back and trying to distract myself with the internet, blogging, Facebook. And I’m feeling old and wondering if anyone else is, too? Misery loves company, you know. LOL What are your “old age” aches and pains?

Fall Color

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

One of the things I love most about fall is the color. Deep rich reds, bright oranges. They’re gorgeous, aren’t they? I love the pumpkins and mums, the fiery maple trees. There is such a sense of home and comfort to be drawn from those colors.

The dh bid on an online auction last week and over the weekend we made an overnight trip through the mountains to pick it up. The trip was long and miserable through the rain and gloom, but the trees? They were glorious the entire ride down and back. Despite the nastiness of the weather fogging up our windows, I continued to be amazed by the colors of fall.

What are your favorite colors? Your favorite season?

Halloween Costume Help Needed

Creative People Please Reply!

My family and I have been invited to spend Halloween at my brothers’ house. It’s a mix of ToT, a street party, and general, all-around fun time. Last year? They had over 600 kids. Nope, that wasn’t one (or two) too many zeros. Six HUNDRED kids, all on one big tree-lined street.

The theme this year amongst the houses where this fabulous, chaotic party takes place– “Scary”

My dh and I have decided to go as Zombies. We figure Vamps have been done (to death! Hehe!) and wanted something different. My dilemma? How do we DO something Zombie different?

I could be a Zombie bride (I even have a dress I could use) and the dh my Zombie groom, but do you have any other suggestions? Any ideas on makeup? Hair?

As the mom who’s never done “Scary” I’m not sure what to do. I’d love to hear what you would do if you were me, just keep it Zombie-like, please.

So, any Zombies out there???

Field trips

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Remember when school field trips were when you piled onto a school bus for the day and went to the dam, the zoo, a festival or fair? I do. When we were able to even GET a field trip, we never traveled far.

So why is it that in the last week I’ve received not one but TWO field trip notifications involving chartered buses to Chicago and Washington, D.C.???? At about $600 a pop?

One was an easy answer. NO.

Heh.

Yeah, that didn’t go over so well and I’m still feeling the fallout. But as the younger sibling who has some growing up to do, we feel it’s the right answer.

But the other??? Not so easy. Said teen is working his butt off earning the money to pay for this magical field trip the likes of which his father and I never had the opportunity to take. But still… When did trips like these become the norm? What happened to field trips that didn’t involve overnight stays?

Thoughts? Suggestions? Did YOU ever take a field trip like this in MIDDLE SCHOOL?
